Ross's Photography
Picturesque Adventures is the name of our website because most of the photography comes from just that...photogenic adventures. I love to explore and make discoveries; whether it be through backpacking the wilderness, watching electricity shoot out of towering thunderheads into the desert, or watching the awe-inspiring northern lights dance across the arctic. Our family has taken many road trips across the country and been to all 50 states. We typically find ourselves in the north during winter or the southwest during summer. Extreme weather may keep most people away during those times, but those are the moments that can be the most spectacular. My favorite type of photography is shooting the aurora borealis and lightning. I also like other types of night, nature, and weather photography.
Ross's Meteorology
My love of photography grew from my deep passion for weather. In grade school I took pictures of cloud types, in high school it was storm clouds, and in college the only reason I bought my first used film SLR camera was because I heard someone say those cameras allow you to take lightning pictures on the "B" (bulb) setting.
It seems difficult to pinpoint exactly when my weather fascination started. In preschool, I remember asking my dad to explain lake-effect snow to me and I asked my grandma to tell me stories about the Blizzard of 1978 repeatedly. At the age of 5, I refused to leave for Kindergarten before watching the noon weather on TV, then I would try and compete with the local Meteorologists by making my own prediction. At that time my forecasts had very little accuracy but my competitive nature and passion were evolving. At the age of 12, I won multiple awards for weather presentations given at the county and state fairs. Three years later, I became a weather spotter for WPTA in Fort Wayne, the National Weather Service, and the local newspaper for my hometown. At the age of 19, I became a volunteer at WLFI in West Lafayette, IN while attending Purdue University.
One weekend in early October of 2005, I got my first chance to be on-air at the age of 21. The weekend was a success and a few weeks later I was filling in every weekend. Along with working weekends I also did some storm chasing for the station during the week all while finishing up my degree at Purdue. In early June of 2007, I accepted a Morning Meteorologist position at WOAY in Oak Hill, West Virginia. 3 months later I became one the youngest Chief Meteorologists in the country after I was promoted. A short time later I was awarded the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation from the American Meteorology Society. In November of 2008, I started a new adventure in Tornado Alley as the Weekend Meteorologist at KHBS/KHOG (40/29 in Fort Smith/Rogers, AR). I enjoyed my time in Arkansas in front and off camera, but I was itching to get back to my roots in the Midwest. I joined the 13ABC Weather Team in Toledo, Ohio during the summer of 2012 and love the forecasting challenges of the Great Lakes. It is also great to only be a couple of hours from my hometown. Since then, I have been fortunate to win many Emmy awards doing the job I love and becoming the station's morning Meteorologist.
